Whipple Company Store & Heritage Museum

Script writing contest

1st prize $250.00


Next year marks the 100 year anniversary of the Paint Creek/Cabin Creek mine war of 1912; a historical event that marked great change in West Virginia History. We are kicking off this seasonal event with a 1st person script writing contest for those who would like to be involved in a re-enactment. This re-enactment will be presented throughout the 2012 season at the Whipple Company Store & Heritage Museum beginning in June 2012. Rehearsals for this event will begin May 7th , 2012 at the Whipple Company Store & Museum.


Contest rules:

Eligibility: Contest open to United States residents of all ages.


Submission Period: All entries must be postmarked no later than March 15, 2012


The submission should consist of a stage play script, written in narrative first person.


Multiple submissions will be accepted.


How to Enter: To participate in the contest you must mail a cover sheet with your printed name, signature, address, phone, and email address along with your submission.

Additional requirements:


The submission must be the entrants original work.

The submission must not include material that may be offensive to young audiences.

Each entrant represents and warrants that (i) his or her submission, in whole and in part, is their own original, previously unpublished work; and such submission does not infringe or violate the law or the rights of any third party.

Sponsor shall have the right, in its sole discretion, to own, edit, composite, morph, scan, duplicate, alter, publish, or otherwise use each submission, in whole or in part, for any purpose which Sponsor deems necessary or desirable (including, without limitation, posting on the Internet), and each entrant irrevocably waives any and all so-called moral/legal rights they may have therein.



Winner Selection:Reasonably soon after the end of the submission period, judges from friends of the Heritage Museum arts and education department will review the submission and select 3 submission from among all eligible submissions using the following judging criteria (each item to be worth up to the maximum percentage rate indicated below):

  1. Relevance to submission topic (ie: mine wars in West Virginia, paint creek/cabin creek, battle of Matewan, march on Blair mountain)35%

  2. Creativity30%

  3. Originality10%

  4. Effectiveness to perform in re-enactment setting. 25%


There will be one (1) grand prize and 2 runner-up prizes.The grand prize will consist of a check for $250.00 with the 2 runner up prizes consisting of a check for $50.00.

Winners will be notified April 1st.2012

General Prize Conditions: In the event that Sponsor in its sole opinion receives an insufficient number of submissions to select the winner, Sponsor may decline to select any winner. Sponsor cannot accurately predict the number of entrants who will participate in the contest.

License to Use Submission/Publicity Release/License to Use: By participating in the contest, each entrant irrevocably grants the Promotion Entities and their respective successors, assigns and licensees, the right to use such entrants submission, in whole or in part and as it may be edited by Sponsor in it sole discretion. Sponsor shall have the right, in its sole discretion, to own, edit, composite, morph, scan, duplicate, alter, publish, or other use each submission, in whole or in part, for any purpose which Sponsor deems necessary or desirable (including, without limitation, posting on the Internet), and each entrant irrevocably waives any and all so-called moral/legal rights they may have therein.
